Let’s be real, writing a resume isn’t most people’s idea of fun. Whether you’re applying for your first job, returning to the workforce or dusting off an old file after a few years in the same role, it can be tough to know where to start.
The good news? A strong resume doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated. It just needs to be clear, tailored and a true reflection of you.
Here are a few practical tips to help your resume stand out for all the right reasons:
1. Tailor it to the job
Generic resumes don’t cut it anymore. Take a few minutes to tweak your resume for each application. Highlight the skills and experiences that match the role and use keywords straight from the job ad.
2. Start with a punchy summary
Kick things off with a short, confident summary that gives employers a snapshot of who you are, what you do and what you’re looking for.
3. Focus on achievements, not just duties
It’s easy to list what your job involved, but what did you actually accomplish? Where possible, include results you delivered (bonus points if you can back it up with numbers!).
4. Keep it clean and simple
No need for fancy fonts or colourful layouts. Stick with a clear structure, bullet points and easy-to-read formatting. Recruiters often skim, make it easy for them to find what matters.
5. Stick to 1–2 pages
Quality over quantity. Include what’s relevant and leave out the rest. Every word should add value.
6. Proofread (then proofread again)
Spelling mistakes and sloppy formatting can undo all your hard work. Run a spellcheck, read it out loud and if possible, get someone else to look it over.
At the end of the day, your resume is your personal pitch. Keep it honest, make it sharp and let it reflect the best of what you bring to the table, without the fluff!
